Darlington RFC Colts 49 – 12 Bishop Auckland RUFC Colts
It was a tough day at the office for Bishop Auckland RUFC Colts as we came away from Blackwell Meadows on the wrong end of a 49–12 scoreline against Darlington RFC.
After three games on the bounce, there were plenty of sore and tired bodies taking to the field, and unfortunately that fatigue appeared to catch up with us today.
From the opening whistle, we looked a shadow of the team that has shown so much fight and determination in recent weeks. The energy, intensity and aggression that have become such an important part of our game simply weren’t there. Too often we looked like we were lumbering around the pitch rather than hunting the opposition down, and Darlington were more than happy to take advantage.
There was a lack of urgency, a lack of accuracy and, at times, a lack of fire in the belly. Against a strong Darlington side, you simply cannot afford to give them opportunities and expect to stay in the contest.
There were moments of good rugby and flashes of what this group is capable of, but they were too few and far between. The 12 points on the scoreboard showed that we never completely stopped trying, but today wasn’t about the result alone, it was about the performance, and collectively we know we can be much better.
Three games in succession has undoubtedly taken its toll, but fatigue cannot become an excuse. Rugby demands resilience, and sometimes you have to find something extra when the legs are tired and the body is hurting.
Today, we didn’t find it!
Credit to Darlington, who played with the intensity and clinical edge required and deserved their victory.
For Bishop Auckland, it’s back to the training ground. Rest the bodies, dust ourselves down, have an honest look at what went wrong and come back with the attitude and hunger that this team has shown previously.
One bad performance doesn’t define this group.
But it does give us something to put right.
We go again.
