Houghton 7 - 24 Bishop Auckland
The Under 14’s attended Houghton on the back of mixed form, and a good performance against Durham which the final score did not reflect.
We've worked on our fitness and attacking structure over the last few weeks, and it paid off on the pitch.
With a shuffle in the pack, Elliot coming into second row, and Riley, Olly and Jacob playing back row, it gave us more dynamism and speed at the breakdown.
We started off really well, line speed was good and tackles being made. We put real pressure on Houghton and this led to mistakes and us capitalising with Isaac scoring, and converted by Oliver.
We seemed to take our foot off the pedal a bit after this, and we were slower to the breakdown, and weren't protecting our ball very well. We let Houghton back into the game, they scored one, and only some last ditch tackling stopped them scoring more.
We asked the players to be quicker to the ruck in the second half and this clearly sunk in as this was a much better half for us.
Elliot (2) and Riley H both scored trademark tries with strong runs which the defence couldn't live with. Riley G added another conversion.
Houghton are a big, physical side, it was a great test for us, but we were more than a match for them. The lads knew they'd been in a real contest, but came through with flying colours, a performance to be proud of....I certainly was!
MOM awards went to Elliot and Isaac who were fantastic in defence and attack.
