Guisborough 17 - 19 Bishop Auckland
We knew from previous matches between us and recent results that this game was always going to be a close contest.
We started really brightly and spent some considerable time in Guisboroughs half, but our possession didn't always end up in points. We were always vulnerable to the counter attack, but some fantastic scrambled defence kept the scores even early on. The lads showed tremendous resilience today, never giving up and putting in some fantastic last-ditch tackles.
We were deservedly up by 12 points at the break. We were strong in the scrum, protected our ball well at the breakdown and tries were scored by Riley with a strong run to the corner, and a lovely team try where quick hands got the ball to Ben in some space, and he used his pace and determination to score. He even had foresight to race under the posts to make the conversion easier.
Despite a rallying call to keep the pressure on, and build on the first half, the lads took the foot off the pedal at the start of the second half and we let Guisborough back into the game. A strong run by the Guis fullback, and missed tackles saw him run the length of the pitch to score. A second try came after we gave away a series of penalties, and we let their forwards run at us without getting forward. This was disappointing as we'd been working on this aspect for weeks.
But our heads never went down, we took the game back to Guis, and after some strong runs by the team, Riley broke through the Guisborough defence to score, then convert his own try. Guisborough rallied again and scored another try, but we held on for the win.
Some fantastic performances around the team, some great tackling by Oliver, Olly, Riley, Isaac and Jacob R, but everyone put a shift in.
For every try scored, there is a group/team of contributors that sometimes go unnoticed, but all are crucial in getting that player over the line. We have a great set of lads who are doing the simple things well in order to create scoring opportunities for others.....we are becoming a real team!!
Ben was back of the match, not only for his amazing try, but his increasing confidence and presence of mind to get under the posts.
Elliot was forward of the match. So strong in defence and attack, some lovely dynamic runs from 8, and always got us over the gain line.
Tough challenge today, but the lads are embracing, and enjoying these challenges week in, week out!
Well done all!
