Billingham 24 - 29 Bishop Auckland
We travelled to Billingham without Sparky (who had been injured playing football) and Harry (who was ill) with 14 players. Billingham, in the true spirit of the game, gave us a player to even up the sides. Billingham are a large, imposing side, but this didn’t deter the lads from putting in their best performance of the season.
The lads showed fantastic commitment, determination and a rapidly improving maturity that ensured their heads never went down.
We took a lot of confidence into this game, and with some strong, dynamic running saw Elliot go over for an early try. The game kept swinging each way with Billingham counter scoring and they turned over a lot of ball at the ruck. But we stuck to our task, we were solid in defence, and supported well. Strong runs from Olly and Riley ended in scores, and Oliver John scored from a fantastic interception.
This was a great game for the spectators, really entertaining, and an appreciation for the commitment shown.
Not one player let themselves or the team down, they really put their bodies on the line.
Anyone of the players today could have got player of match, but Mckenzie shaded it in the forwards for his strong go forward, and strength in tackle, especially late in the second half. Archie in the backs, making his full debut and playing with no fear, getting stuck in and making some great runs.
Was so proud of this team today, a great test, but one we didn't shy away from.
